Every resource roll in CATAN comes from two six-sided dice, which means outcomes are not equally likely. The center values, especially 6 and 8, appear much more often than edge values like 2 and 12. Experienced players treat number tokens as an economic signal: high-frequency numbers drive your resource economy, while low-frequency numbers create waiting turns.
The dots below each token are shorthand for expected frequency. More dots means more production over time. If you compare two openings with similar resource types, the opening that touches more total dots usually compounds faster in the first ten rounds. A 2:1 harbor has meaningful value only if nearby high-probability tiles feed it. If that resource is distant by more than two vertices, the harbor is usually a trap.

How to Choose Your Starting Settlement
Your first placement decides your production curve, trade leverage, and expansion speed. In competitive tables, weak openings are difficult to recover from even with good tactical play. CATAN Port Strategy: When Harbors Actually Matter
Many players overrate harbor symbols and underrate production context. A harbor is a conversion tool, not free value. For catan 2 to 1 port strategy, the right question is not "can I touch this harbor?" but "will I generate enough of that resource to convert repeatedly?"
3:1 Generic Port
Worth prioritizing when your opening has broad production but no clear specialist route. It smooths awkward hands and preserves flexibility.
2:1 Specialized Port
Strong only when matching resource production is high. Otherwise the position looks good on paper but underperforms every round.
